While LimeWire was a trailblazer, its trajectory was forcibly altered. In October 2010, after years of legal battles, U.S. federal judge Kimba Wood issued a permanent injunction against Lime Wire LLC, ordering the company to disable the "searching, downloading, uploading, file trading and/or file distribution functionality" of its software. It was the beginning of the end for the classic LimeWire.

For software preservationists and retro-computing hobbyists, downloading LimeWire 5.5.10 is an exercise in digital archaeology.

For users sharing a network within a university or corporate office, the software featured automatic local discovery. It prioritized connections on the same subnet, enabling near-instantaneous transfers that bypassed internet bandwidth caps entirely. The Comparison: 5.5.10 vs. The Shutdown Builds
