The standard, titled "Industrial trucks — Safety requirements and verification — Part 4: Driverless industrial trucks and their systems," is the primary international safety benchmark for Automated Guided Vehicles (AGVs) and Autonomous Mobile Robots (AMRs). First published in 2020 and updated in June 2023 , it provides a rigorous framework for designing, integrating, and operating autonomous material handling equipment in industrial environments.

Compare your current fleet of AGVs against Annex A of the standard (checklist format). Identify missing safety features:

ISO 3691‑4 is far more than a technical document—it is the . As automation continues to accelerate, the importance of having a rigorous, internationally‑agreed set of safety requirements grows in parallel.

ISO 3691-4 does not apply to driverless trucks used primarily on public roads or for passenger transport.

Like all machinery safety standards, ISO 3691‑4 places strong emphasis on (sometimes called “user instructions”). Clause 6 of the standard (entitled “Information for use”) mandates that the manufacturer provide comprehensive documentation covering installation, commissioning, operation, maintenance, decommissioning, and—crucially—the residual risks that cannot be completely eliminated through design and safeguarding measures.

Organizations such as ANSI (USA), BSI (UK), DIN (Germany), or AFNOR (France) provide localized portals to purchase and download the PDF securely.

Driverless trucks must be equipped with active sensing systems (such as safety laser scanners or 3D cameras) to detect human presence.
